DHL’s freight forwarding division has partnered with Vela to introduce wind-powered cargo shipping for transatlantic transport. This collaboration, announced on June 22, merges sustainability with logistics. Vela’s fleet, featuring a trimaran design, will operate routes between France and the U.S., significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Service begins in early 2027.
Recent advancements in wind propulsion technology have surpassed 100 cargo vessels utilizing wind energy, achieving over five million tons of deadweight capacity. This shift reflects a growing recognition of wind propulsion as a viable decarbonization solution, with over 230 systems saving more than 100,000 tons of CO2 annually in the shipping industry.
The Orient Express Corinthian, the largest sailing ship in the world, was launched in Saint-Nazaire, France, on April 29. With a displacement of 15,000 metric tons, it boasts a wind propulsion speed record and innovative SolidSail technology, addressing maritime decarbonization. The ship features automated rigs for optimal navigation and luxury amenities.
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has received approval in principle from ClassNK for a liquefied CO2 carrier designed with wind-assisted propulsion. Developed with Samsung Heavy Industries, the vessel will transport 40,000 cubic meters of CO2 using three Wind Challenger units, enhancing fuel efficiency and reducing emissions in carbon capture efforts.
Finland’s Bluetech has partnered with INSW to develop the ‘SeaWasp’ tanker, focusing on wind propulsion while integrating with INSW’s MR fleet. Enhanced by Norsepower’s Rotor Sails, the design achieves substantial fuel savings, with projected annual reductions of 597.2 metric tons, improving efficiency by 13.5% under optimal conditions.
In 2024, the wind-assisted ship propulsion industry experienced significant growth, with 54 large ships operational and seven more designated as wind-ready. The International Windship Association reported a global increase in wind vessels, with an orderbook of 80 ships and more expected for 2026 and 2027. Wind propulsion is becoming popular in shipping.
