Recent advancements in wind propulsion technology have propelled the global fleet of cargo ships utilizing wind energy past the 100-vessel mark, achieving over five million tons of deadweight (DWT) capacity. This milestone signifies a shift in the perception of wind propulsion, transitioning from a niche method to a rapidly growing decarbonization solution within the shipping industry.

Currently, these vessels are equipped with over 230 wind propulsion systems, collectively saving more than 100,000 tons of CO2 annually. Additionally, 12 large cargo ships are classified as ‘wind-ready,’ featuring infrastructure for future wind propulsion installations. Smaller vessels under 400GT and some traditionally rigged cruise ships are also harnessing wind power but are not included in the primary count.

Investment in wind technology has surged, resulting in a year-on-year doubling of vessels with wind systems. In May 2022, 21 large commercial ships utilized wind propulsion, a figure that has since increased nearly fivefold. Various wind solutions are available to ship owners, including suction sails and rotor sails, with the tanker and bulker sectors leading in installations.

The International Windship Association (IWSA) supports this momentum, representing developers and institutions advocating for the adoption of wind energy in the maritime sector.
