The Orient Express Corinthian, the largest sailing ship globally, was launched on April 29 in Saint-Nazaire, France, marking a significant expansion for the renowned brand. With a displacement of around 15,000 metric tons, it has already achieved a wind propulsion speed record for vessels of its size. Built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique, the ship embodies a decade of research and innovation, featuring the advanced SolidSail technology aimed at addressing maritime decarbonization challenges.

Equipped with three automated rigs, each measuring 1,500 square meters and over 100 meters tall, the ship can achieve 100 percent wind-powered propulsion under favorable weather conditions. These rigs can rotate 360 degrees and tilt up to 70 degrees, allowing for optimal positioning and navigation under bridges. In sea trials conducted in February 2026, the ship reached speeds of 12 knots in 20-knot winds, a remarkable feat for its size.

In addition to wind propulsion, the ship also features a hybrid system powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and incorporates energy-efficient technologies. An AI-assisted detection system continuously monitors for marine life and objects to reduce collision risks, while dynamic positioning technology allows it to maintain its position without anchoring.

Sébastien Bazin, Chairman and CEO of Accor, emphasized the natural synergy of extending the Orient Express brand to the sea. Scheduled to start commercial service on May 2, the ship will initially cruise the Mediterranean before heading to the Caribbean for winter. The vessel offers 54 passenger suites, five restaurants, a theater, and various luxury amenities. Its sister ship, Orient Express Olympian, is currently being outfitted and is expected to launch in 2027, as luxury hotel brands increasingly venture into the cruise industry.
