DHL’s freight forwarding division is teaming up with Vela to offer a wind-powered cargo shipping option for transatlantic transport. Announced on June 22, this partnership aims to merge environmental sustainability with logistical efficiency. DHL Global Forwarding France will secure space on Vela’s new vessel, joining a group of pioneering partners that will help launch this innovative service.
Vela is developing a fleet of wind-powered cargo ships, with the first of five expected to be operational by 2028. Currently under construction at Austal Philippines, the vessel will facilitate weekly transatlantic routes between France and the United States. The service is set to begin in early 2027, with a projected travel time of 10 to 13 days to New Jersey, and a return to France taking 8 to 10 days. The ship is designed for speed, averaging 14 knots, and will utilize advanced weather routing for optimal navigation.
The trimaran design, crafted by experts VPLP and MerConcept, promises enhanced stability and speed, making it ideal for transporting high-value goods. With a capacity of 415 metric tons and temperature-controlled cargo areas, the ship will cater to pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and luxury items. Additionally, the vessels will be completely wind-powered, achieving a 99% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions through their extensive sail area and renewable energy systems.
