ClassNK has recently granted Approval in Principle (AiP) for a membrane-type LNG carrier outfitted with the innovative ‘Wind Challenger’ hard sail wind propulsion system. Developed in collaboration by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. and Hanwha Ocean Co., Ltd., this milestone represents the first-ever AiP for an LNG carrier featuring a Wind-Assisted Propulsion System (WAPS).
In response to stringent environmental regulations and the need for fuel cost reduction, the adoption of wind-assisted propulsion systems is gaining momentum. These systems are anticipated to play a crucial role in curbing CO2 emissions by harnessing wind power. However, the installation of such systems on ships comes with potential risks to the vessel’s structure, crew safety, and the marine environment.
To address these risks effectively, ClassNK has released the ‘Guidelines for Wind-Assisted Propulsion Systems for Ships’ as a comprehensive standard for ships equipped with wind-assisted propulsion systems. By conducting a thorough review of the ship’s conceptual design in accordance with established rules and guidelines, ClassNK ensures compliance with safety requirements before granting AiP for innovative projects like the LNG carrier with the ‘Wind Challenger’ system.
