The maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal no 3 as Cyclone Remal is expected to pass through Bangladesh for about three days after hitting the majority of coastal areas tonight. The depression over the central Bay of Bengal is intensifying into a cyclonic storm and could make landfall as a ‘severe cyclonic storm’ between 9:00 pm and 12:00 am tonight, according to the Bangladesh Meteorologist Department (BMD).
The deep depression was located 425 km south of the Payra seaport on Saturday afternoon, and meteorologists are predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in the country after the cyclone hits. The BMD has advised all fishing boats and trawlers over the north bay and deep sea to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.
The maximum sustained wind speed within 48 km of the deep depression center is about 50 kph, and the BMD classifies cyclones based on their wind speeds, with a ‘severe cyclonic storm’ expected to hit coastal areas tonight. Squally weather may affect the maritime ports, North Bay, and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh, according to the Met Office bulletin.
