Indian ports have shown significant improvement in key parameters, with average container turnaround time (TRT) at major ports improving to 22.57 hours in 2023-24 from 23.44 hours in the previous fiscal year. This improvement puts India ahead of countries like the USA, Australia, and Singapore in terms of efficiency. Investments in cargo handling equipment and digitalization have contributed to this progress.
New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) and V. O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA) have recorded the most significant improvements in container TRT, showing efficiency gains in operations. Overall, Indian ports handled 532.6 million tonnes of cargo in 2023-24, a 6% increase from the previous fiscal year. Paradip Port Authority (PPA) handled the most cargo, with a net surplus of Rs 1570 crore.
While most major ports showed improved performance and higher earnings, the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) was the only port to record a decline in cargo handling. Despite this, DPA still reported a higher net surplus. Overall, the data compiled by the Ministry for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways highlights the positive growth trajectory of Indian ports in terms of efficiency and cargo handling capabilities.
