Investigation Launched into Sinking of Mike Lynch’s Yacht Bayesian in Sicily: Seven Victims Found

Italian prosecutors in Sicily are investigating the sinking of Mike Lynch’s yacht, Bayesian, and suspect that the victims were likely caught unawares during bad weather, either asleep or attempting to escape. Deputy Prosecutor Raffaele Cammarano stated that although the circumstances of the deaths are still unclear, autopsies will provide more insight into what happened. The bodies found on the ship’s surface-facing side suggest a possible attempt to escape, but nothing can be conclusively proven at this time.

The yacht sank within minutes during a storm in the early hours of the morning, with prosecutors highlighting that the passengers were probably not awake at the time. However, there are currently no suspects identified as investigations proceed against unknown persons. The prosecutor expressed condolences to the families of the seven victims, emphasizing that improper compliance with procedures could make the situation even more devastating.

The coast guard and local fire service recovered the bodies of the deceased, with ongoing focus on those rescued alive as part of the investigation. The yacht’s manufacturer suspects human error in the tragedy, noting water intake and electrical system failure. The incident is under investigation by British authorities as well. As speculation surrounds the case, authorities are cautious in revealing details to avoid prejudicing the inquiry. Captain James Cutfield and survivors are cooperating with the investigation as questions persist about the tragedy aboard the Bayesian.
