The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has introduced a new qualification pathway aimed at Deck Officers to enhance their careers in the expanding yacht sector. The Yacht Unlimited Certificate of Competency (CoC) enables holders to serve as Chief Mate or Master on any yacht, including those over 3,000 gross tonnage, without needing to divert their careers for training on cargo vessels. This initiative is part of the MCA’s Cadet Training and Modernisation Programme, which incorporates a revised UK maritime syllabus.

MCA Chief Examiner Ajit Jacob emphasized that the Yacht Unlimited CoC promotes safety, professionalism, and flexibility, ultimately benefiting seafarers, operators, and the broader UK maritime industry. This innovative approach acknowledges the essential skills required for deck officers while also recognizing the specialized knowledge needed to lead crews effectively across different sectors. The new qualification pathway aims to facilitate career advancement for dedicated deck officers while upholding high standards at the management level.

The Yacht Unlimited CoC will adhere to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) and will be communicated to the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Previously, aspiring large yacht professionals had to navigate a lengthy certification route, which often took years and was impractical for many experienced seafarers. The streamlined process now allows for seagoing service on yachts to count as valid experience, maintaining regulatory integrity while ensuring career continuity.

Additionally, the new pathway will enable progression from Master (Yachts) under 3,000 GT to a Master Unlimited (Yachts) CoC and offers a streamlined route for those with prior management-level qualifications from MCA-approved institutions. A similar pathway for engineers is also in development and is expected to launch later this year. For further information on the Yacht Unlimited CoC, refer to Section 4 of MSN 1858 (Amendment 1).
