German carrier Hapag-Lloyd has received a new ultra-large container vessel, the Hamburg Express, from South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean. This 399-meter-long, 23,660 TEU vessel is part of a series of 12 “Hamburg Express” class containerships, making it the largest to sail under the German flag. The first ship of the series, the Berlin Express, was delivered in 2023, with the remaining ships scheduled for delivery by the end of 2025.
Equipped with MAN B&W11G95ME-C10.5-GI dual fuel main engines, the Hamburg Express can operate using very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) and liquefied natural gas (LNG), along with the auxiliary engines and boilers. A single tank of LNG is enough for a full Europe-Asia-Europe round trip, and the engine can also run on non-fossil fuels like synthetic gas. Additionally, all vessels in this class can connect to an environmentally friendly onshore power supply, allowing the auxiliary diesel engines to be shut down in port.
The Hamburg Express will be officially christened by First Lady Eva-Maria Tschentscher during a ceremony in Hamburg on November 4th. This new addition to Hapag-Lloyd’s fleet represents a step towards more sustainable shipping practices, with its advanced engine technology and ability to utilize alternative fuels. The vessel’s delivery marks a milestone in the series of Hamburg Express class containerships, highlighting Hapag-Lloyd’s commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility in the maritime industry.
