An Indian cargo vessel experienced a suspected drone attack in the Gulf of Oman, highlighting ongoing security threats to commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz region. Reports indicate that the Indian-flagged vessel ignited after being struck in Omani waters while en route to the UAE.
This incident comes amidst increasing worries about assaults on merchant vessels in the Gulf, which has seen maritime traffic frequently disrupted due to heightened tensions. Maritime security sources suspect that a drone or missile attack may have caused the fire and subsequent sinking of another vessel in a prior incident off Oman.
In that earlier event, the Omani coast guard successfully rescued all 14 crew members of the Haji Ali, a livestock-carrying ship from Somalia, transporting goods to the UAE. The recent attack on the India-bound vessel raises significant concerns for Indian seafarers, shipowners, and insurers operating in the Gulf of Oman.
The Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz are critical for global shipping. Any assault on vessels in these waters can affect freight costs, insurance rates, and shipping routes to Asia. India has condemned such attacks and called for the safeguarding of navigation rights, adding to market unease in a region fraught with geopolitical risks.
