India and Indonesia are enhancing maritime cooperation, focusing on key initiatives like India’s Great Nicobar Island project and Indonesia’s Sabang Port, as discussed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent State Visit to Indonesia. The two nations aim to further a shared maritime vision introduced in 2018, prioritizing connectivity and security within the Indian Ocean.
The discussions included plans to boost mutual maritime domain awareness and improve collaboration between their Coast Guards. Indonesia will place a liaison officer at the Information Fusion Centre in Gurugram, emphasizing the need for real-time information sharing in regional waters.
Both countries exchanged views on strategic infrastructure projects, including the Great Nicobar Island development and improvements at Sabang Port. They agreed to continue the work of their Joint Task Force, with a third meeting scheduled for later in the year to advance cooperation initiatives.
Additionally, India and Indonesia are set to reinforce their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, especially in defense and security, moving towards deeper industry collaboration. On the economic front, they seek to elevate bilateral trade, currently around USD 25 billion, by exploring opportunities in key sectors like pharmaceuticals and digital infrastructure. Initiatives to strengthen educational ties were also emphasized, including plans for Indian universities to establish campuses in Indonesia.
