McDermott and BW Offshore have formed a partnership to explore the feasibility of producing offshore blue ammonia on a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) facility. This collaboration is aimed at promoting the transition to low-carbon energy sources and demonstrating a commitment to sustainable energy practices. By combining their expertise, the two companies hope to advance the development of low carbon ammonia production on FPSOs, which offers various benefits such as environmental advantages, improved safety, reliable scheduling, and competitive costs.
BW Offshore will bring its knowledge of FPSO solutions and innovative approach to offshore production facilities to the partnership, while McDermott will contribute its experience in engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (EPCI) across the energy sector. McDermott will also leverage its global fabrication assets and modularized solutions to support the project. Vaseem Khan, Senior Vice President of Global Operations at McDermott, emphasized the importance of this collaboration in driving the energy transition forward and developing a viable pathway for offshore blue ammonia production.
Ammonia produced from renewable or low-carbon sources, known as green and blue ammonia, plays a crucial role in global decarbonization efforts. It can be used for carbon-free fertilizers, as an energy carrier, or as a fuel. The partnership between McDermott and BW Offshore represents a significant step towards advancing sustainable energy practices and supporting the global transition to cleaner energy sources. By combining their strengths and resources, the two companies aim to make a positive impact on the energy industry and contribute to a more sustainable future.
