The Centre provided an update on the maritime situation in the Persian Gulf, revealing that the Ministry of Shipping has successfully facilitated the safe repatriation of over 3,639 Indian seafarers from various locations in the region. During an inter-ministerial briefing on developments in West Asia, Opesh Kumar Sharma, Director in the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, emphasized the ongoing measures to ensure the safety and security of Indian vessels and their crews.
Sharma noted that in the past 72 hours alone, 47 seafarers have been repatriated. He reassured that port operations across India remain stable, with no reports of congestion. Additionally, a 62,370-metric-ton LNG cargo vessel is scheduled to arrive at Dahej on Friday morning. The Malta-flagged LNG carrier DISHA, managed by a SCI-led consortium, successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz while transporting LNG bound for India.
To further support Indian seafarers, the Ministry, through the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping), is in continuous coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs and other stakeholders. The control room established by DG Shipping has managed over 13,187 calls and 29,376 emails, including 450 calls and 1,077 emails from seafarers and their families in the last 72 hours.
