An Indian seafarer named Suraj Yadav, a wiper from Deoria, Uttar Pradesh, was tragically killed when the MV Cape Dao, a bulk carrier flagged by Antigua and Barbuda, was attacked while on its way to India near the coast of Oman. This incident occurred on Wednesday and has raised significant concerns regarding maritime security in the region.
The Indian Embassy in Muscat is actively monitoring the situation and is in close coordination with Omani authorities regarding the safety of the crew. Reports indicate that there were 19 Indian nationals on board the ship, which had a total crew of 28 members, including 20 Indians. The Forward Seamen’s Union of India (FSUI) reported that the vessel suffered two torpedo strikes, one hitting the port side of the accommodation area and another impacting the hull near the engine room.
Omani authorities managed to rescue the surviving crew members, providing them with necessary medical assistance. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that 19 Indian seafarers were evacuated, including 18 survivors from the attack, and are working towards their prompt repatriation. The MEA expressed gratitude towards Omani authorities for their support and extended condolences to Yadav’s family.
This incident underscores the ongoing threats to commercial shipping in the region, prompting the MEA to call for an immediate cessation of attacks on commercial vessels and the protection of maritime navigation and commerce in international waters.
