A new zero-emission electric ferry project in Mumbai aims to provide the public with an environmentally friendly and pollutant-free mode of transportation. This initiative, called Harit Sagar or the “Green Harbor” initiative, is part of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways’ effort to focus on sustainable port operations and reduce environmental impact. The goal is to achieve net-zero emissions by 2047 and increase the use of renewable energy in major ports by 60%.
The electric ferry will offer a faster and more comfortable journey from Mumbai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Port, cutting travel time by 20 minutes to just 30-40 minutes. With air-conditioned seating and improved sailing comfort, the new ferry is set to enter service in January 2025, enhancing the overall travel experience for passengers. These efficient ferry boats can accommodate 20-24 passengers at a time and provide online ticketing and check-in options for a seamless travel experience.
The project represents a significant step towards sustainable and efficient transport, offering passengers a greener and more comfortable travel experience. With specifications such as a passenger capacity of 20-25 during the fair season and 10-12 during the foul season, a speed of 10-12 knots, and a length of 12-15 meters, the zero-emission boat project is poised to make commuting more convenient and hassle-free for travelers connecting Jawaharlal Nehru Port with Mumbai.
