Austal Limited’s subsidiary, Austal Australasia, has secured a contract worth between A$265 and A$275 million from Gotlandsbolaget of Sweden. The contract involves the design and construction of a 130-meter combined cycle, ‘hydrogen-ready’ vehicle passenger ferry as part of Gotlandsbolaget’s ‘Horizon X’ program. This high-speed ROPAX catamaran, the largest vessel ever built by Austal, will feature a unique propulsion system with gas and steam turbines, a first for high-speed craft. With a capacity to carry up to 1,500 passengers, cargo, and 400 vehicles, the ferry will be constructed at the Austal Philippines shipyard using energy-efficient processes and technologies to reduce emissions.

Austal Limited CEO Paddy Gregg expressed excitement about the Horizon X project, which aims to redefine commercial ferry capabilities with a multi-fuel and hydrogen-capable combined cycle powerplant. The vessel’s design focuses on sustainability, incorporating cutting-edge green technology such as a hydrogen-ready gas turbine propulsion system. Gotlandsbolaget CEO Håkan Johansson highlighted the vessel’s role in achieving climate-neutral operations through lightweight green aluminum and advanced hydrodynamic design to minimize fuel consumption and emissions. Austal and Gotlandsbolaget initially announced plans for the multifuel high-speed ferry design in April 2023, engaging with technology providers worldwide to select equipment and define system arrangements.

The project gained approval in principle from DNV in October 2024, confirming compliance with rules related to gas-fueled ship installations and safety codes. The partnership between Austal and Gotlandsbolaget aims to lead the transition to decarbonize commercial ferries, with a focus on flexible fuel technology and innovative propulsion systems. Construction of the Horizon X ferry is scheduled to begin in the first half of CY2026, with completion expected in mid-2028. This industry-leading project demonstrates a commitment to sustainability and efficiency in maritime transportation.
