On Sunday, August 30, at Mumbai Port, two individuals were injured when a truck-mounted crane overturned and ignited in flames. The incident took place around 7:15 PM local time at the India Dock, where cargo was being unloaded from the bulk carrier Vienna, which is registered in Barbados.
According to police reports, the accident occurred while two cranes were working to lift a 140-tonne load from the ship. Suddenly, a cargo strap on one of the cranes failed, leading to the load becoming unstable. This instability caused the truck-mounted crane to topple over.
As the cranes collapsed, friction generated from their make contact triggered a fire, which escalated the situation. Emergency services responded to the scene to manage the aftermath and assist those injured. The police are currently investigating the incident to determine the exact cause of the failure and to ensure safety measures are in place to prevent future accidents at the port.
