Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, launched the Logistics Port Performance Index (LPPI) for FY2024-25 and four digital initiatives aimed at modernizing India’s maritime governance. These announcements occurred during the 37th Foundation Day of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) in Mumbai. The LPPI, created under the Sagar Aankalan framework, benchmarks port efficiency across dry bulk, liquid bulk, and container cargo by evaluating indicators such as vessel turnaround time and berth idle time.
Sonowal emphasized that the LPPI would enhance India’s maritime standing by fostering transparency, competition, and service improvements among ports. Notably, V.O. Chidambaranar Port ranked third nationally for FY2024-25, showcasing strong performance across cargo types. In addition, the minister unveiled four digital platforms from the Directorate General of Shipping, including modules for seafarer grievances, ship registration, and medical practitioners.
Central to these initiatives is the Unified Ship Recycling Portal, part of a larger Rs 70,000-crore maritime development package. Under the Ship Recycling Credit Scheme, ship owners recycling vessels at compliant yards will receive credit notes worth 40% of the scrap value, promoting domestic shipbuilding aligned with the Maritime India Vision 2030.
