Swedish engineering firm Cavotec has been chosen to install India’s first Automated Mooring System at Gateway Terminals India, a prominent container terminal at Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Navi Mumbai. This project, initiated by the port authority, aims to enhance the terminal’s operational capabilities by replacing traditional mooring ropes with Cavotec’s advanced MoorMaster technology. This system securely moors and releases large vessels within seconds, significantly improving docking processes.
The implementation of this automated system is expected to enhance worker safety by eliminating the risks associated with handling heavy mooring lines. Port officials anticipate reduced vessel turnaround times, enabling ships to dock and depart more swiftly. Additionally, by decreasing the safety gap between docked vessels from 25 to 15 meters, the terminal can accommodate larger ships alongside standard vessels simultaneously.
With over 500 ships docking annually, the new system aims to save at least an hour per vessel during the berthing process, translating to a potential recovery of 500 operational hours each year. This equates to an additional 21 working days for the terminal, which handles around 2.18 million TEUs annually and aims for 3 million TEUs.
Expected to enter operation by the end of 2027, the MoorMaster system will feature automated surge control and remote micro-shifting capabilities, further improving efficiency and reducing harmful emissions by up to 90%.
