Hindustan Shipyard Signs MoU to Build Ships at Kakinada Seaports

Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), the Visakhapatnam-based shipbuilder under India’s Ministry of Defence, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Kakinada Seaports Limited (KSPL) to develop shipbuilding operations at KSPL’s facility in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. Kakinada is a busy port city on India’s east coast, facing the Bay of Bengal, further south along the Andhra coast from Visakhapatnam.

The MoU was signed during the INMARCO 2026 maritime conference in Mumbai by Rear Admiral Chandreshekharan Raghuram, Chairman and Managing Director of HSL, and K. V. Rao, Chairman and Managing Director of KSPL.

Under the agreement, the two sides will use the port’s existing infrastructure, including slipways and jetty facilities, for HSL’s shipbuilding work and will upgrade these facilities where needed. They will also explore joint business models so that major shipbuilding projects can be taken up at Kakinada. No investment amount or timeline has been announced so far.

The move allows HSL to add building capacity by using space that already exists at a working port, rather than waiting for a completely new yard. It fits India’s wider plan to grow domestic shipbuilding and ship repair under Maritime India Vision 2030 and the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, and could strengthen Andhra Pradesh’s place as a shipbuilding state.

For India’s maritime workforce, more shipbuilding on the east coast could mean new shore jobs for marine engineers, naval architects, ship superintendents and yard staff. Over time, a larger Indian-built fleet may also open more berths for Indian seafarers.
