Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has announced a ₹1,100-crore expansion at its Kattupalli shipyard and modular fabrication facility near Chennai. This initiative aims to enhance the utilization of existing infrastructure and boost shipbuilding and repair capabilities in the coming years.
The expansion will occur on L&T’s existing land and will require new environmental and coastal clearances before commencing. This development is part of L&T’s broader investment strategy in Tamil Nadu, where the company is also funding various manufacturing and infrastructure projects.
The upgrade involves the construction of new fabrication and assembly shops alongside vital support infrastructure, including paint and blasting facilities, warehouses, office spaces, residential buildings, and a skill development center. These enhancements are designed to align the shipyard with previously approved capacities for shipbuilding and repair activities.
The Kattupalli facility plays a crucial role in L&T’s maritime and offshore engineering business, and the expansion is expected to strengthen its contribution to India’s shipbuilding sector. Additionally, industry reports suggest that this project will create jobs and stimulate industrial activity in the Chennai region.
