Kamarajar Port in Tamil Nadu has emerged as India’s second major port with an 18-meter draft capability, enhancing the nation’s maritime competitiveness. This upgrade allows the port to accommodate larger vessels, which will significantly improve cargo handling efficiency.
The new draft enables the port to manage ships carrying cargo parcels of up to 170,000 DWT, making it suitable for larger bulk carriers essential for India’s import and export activities.
This expansion follows a dredging project costing approximately ₹440 crore, showcasing the port’s commitment to improving its infrastructure for handling increased cargo volumes effectively.
Officials noted that this upgrade will bolster the port’s capacity to support trade flows and strengthen India’s position in regional shipping. The enhancement comes at a crucial time when shipping lines seek deeper and more efficient terminals to meet rising cargo demands.
