On the International Day for Women in Maritime, Professor Momoko Kitada was honored with the IMO Gender Equality Award 2026, coinciding with the release of the “Handbook on Gender Mainstreaming in the Maritime Sector.” This handbook, co-authored by Kitada and developed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the World Maritime University (WMU), serves as a practical guide aimed at integrating gender equality into maritime operations, emphasizing its connection to safety, efficiency, and crew wellbeing.
The handbook addresses critical issues long advocated by maritime professionals, such as the need for properly fitting personal protective equipment (PPE), safer working environments, and the adoption of inclusive, gender-neutral language. Gender mainstreaming is highlighted as a vital approach, ensuring that the needs and experiences of all individuals are incorporated into policies, training, and safety protocols.
Moreover, the handbook challenges traditional assumptions about ship design, which often cater to a ‘default’ male seafarer, potentially compromising safety. It underscores the importance of inclusive language in recruitment and workplace culture, which can significantly impact participation rates among women in the sector. Additionally, it addresses broader safety concerns, including bullying and mental health.
Professor Kitada’s advocacy emphasizes the necessity of taking action to promote equality. For those feeling unsupported in their workplaces, engaging with union representatives can be a constructive step towards fostering inclusion and addressing inequalities in the maritime industry.
