The Maritime India Foundation has established partnerships with IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, and Indian Maritime University, Chennai, to create Maritime Innovation Hubs as part of the Sagarmala Startup Innovation Initiative under the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) took place at the Chennai Port Authority on Tuesday, with plans to include IIT Kharagpur in the initiative soon.
The event was led by S. Viswanathan, Managing Director of the Maritime India Foundation and Chairperson of the Chennai Port Authority. With the MoUs now formalized, the initiative is moving into its execution phase, which will involve engaging and mentoring 36 startups focused on 40 innovation projects aimed at tackling significant challenges within the Indian maritime sector.
These partnerships will enable the Maritime India Foundation and the Maritime Innovation Hubs to provide a collaborative platform where startups can address real-world operational issues faced by the maritime industry. This approach is expected to foster the development of advanced technological solutions, contributing to the modernization and transformation of the sector.
The initiative aligns with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and the national agenda of “Make in India, Make for the World,” promoting indigenous innovation and enhancing the overall maritime landscape in India.
