New Mangalore Port Announces Vessel Charge Rebates for Container Ships
New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) in Mangaluru, Karnataka, on India’s west coast along the Arabian Sea, has announced higher rebates on vessel-related charges for container ships. The new rates apply from 3 November 2026 to 31 March 2027.
Under the scheme, feeder container vessels will get a 35% rebate, while mainline container vessels will get a 50% rebate. Vessel-related charges are the fees a port collects from a ship for using its facilities during a call.
The port says the aim is to make Mangaluru more cost-competitive and to encourage shipping lines to start new services, expand existing ones and bring more container business to the port. The larger rebate for mainline ships is meant to attract bigger vessels and direct links to international shipping networks. The feeder rebate is designed to strengthen regional connections with transshipment hubs.
NMPA is one of India’s major ports and serves the hinterland of Karnataka and nearby states. The port has not yet published detailed eligibility conditions, such as vessel size limits or exactly which charges are covered, so shipping lines will need to check the terms with the port.
The move is part of wider efforts by Indian ports to win more direct container calls and reduce dependence on foreign transshipment hubs. If more lines add Mangaluru to their rotations, crews on container ships may see more calls at the port, and the growth in port activity could support local maritime jobs and services for visiting seafarers.
