New Marine Biotech Corridor Planned in Porbandar

Porbandar to Get Greenfield Shipbuilding Cluster

Gujarat is set to invest Rs 100 crore over the next five years to establish a Marine Biotechnology Research & Innovation Corridor (M-BRIC) in Mocha village, Porbandar district. This initiative aims to leverage the state’s marine biological resources to create high-value products, fostering new business and employment opportunities for coastal communities. The project, spearheaded by the Gujarat State Biotechnology Mission (GSBTM) under the Department of Science and Technology, seeks to create an integrated ecosystem that encompasses marine research, biotechnology, manufacturing, and commercialization.

The M-BRIC corridor will unite various stakeholders, including government departments, research institutions, universities, industries, startups, and coastal communities. The goal is to build a comprehensive value chain that spans from identifying marine resources to product development and market entry. The project will utilize advanced technologies such as genomics and bioinformatics to enhance product development from marine resources.

Mocha village has been designated as the central hub for this corridor, facilitating connections among marine research, cultivation, processing, and entrepreneurship. Additionally, the proposal includes a dedicated seaweed-processing cluster and plans for a state-level seaweed brood bank to support sustainable harvesting practices. The initiative aims to explore a wide range of applications from seaweed, including biofertilizers, nutraceuticals, and marine-derived biomaterials, with a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability and community training programs.
