Yemen’s Houthis have launched attacks on Aden’s international airport using ballistic missiles and drones, escalating the ongoing conflict with the Saudi-backed government forces. Recent clashes have concentrated around the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a crucial shipping route for energy exports, particularly following tensions related to U.S.-Iran relations that have impacted passages through the Strait of Hormuz. In response, Yemeni forces, supported by Saudi airstrikes, initiated a counteroffensive to reclaim lost territory near the strait and the town of Mocha.
The Houthis have consistently targeted vital infrastructure, including airports and oil facilities, in Saudi Arabia, prompting the Saudi-led coalition to intercept missiles aimed at Riyadh and other cities. Reports indicate that on Wednesday, one missile struck near Aden International Airport, leading to the rerouting of a flight from Cairo. This airport serves as a key gateway for many in Yemen outside Houthi control, accentuating its strategic importance in the ongoing conflict.
Fighting continues around the coastal areas, particularly in the Dhubab district, where pro-government forces are attempting to gain ground in the surrounding hills. These advancements are essential for maintaining momentum towards controlling the coastal regions, which could significantly influence the course of the conflict. Despite attempts at a ceasefire, hostilities have reignited, leading to humanitarian crises and increased instability in Yemen.
