Amid escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and recent attacks on commercial vessels, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the need for a “rules-based” maritime order. During the ‘Sagarmanthan-The Ocean Dialogue,’ Shipping Secretary Vijay Kumar conveyed Modi’s message, highlighting India’s belief that oceans should serve as a source of shared prosperity, allowing every country a voice and an opportunity for growth. He articulated his vision for a free, open, and secure maritime environment that fosters peace, prosperity, and progress for all nations. Modi expressed confidence that the Sagarmanthan: The Great Oceans Dialogue would bolster this broader vision.
Highlighting India’s relationship with the oceans, Modi underscored the importance of responsibility, asserting that oceans should serve as a source of shared prosperity. He advocated for a system where every nation has a voice and the opportunity to thrive. This commitment to collaborative growth is vital for ensuring equitable access to maritime resources.
In anticipation of the impending India-EU free trade agreement (FTA), the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways announced the formation of an industry coalition aimed at establishing the India-EU Green Shipping Corridor. This initiative includes key ports, such as V O Chidambaranar in Tuticorin, alongside renewable energy and infrastructure stakeholders.
Shipping Secretary Vijay Kumar indicated that the government is pursuing a comprehensive maritime agenda across various sectors. He also mentioned plans for a shipbuilding investment conclave scheduled for next month in New Delhi. Modi noted that Indian seafarers now represent the second-largest maritime workforce globally, with young Indians earning respect across international waters.
