During the 116th episode of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the historical significance of Lothal in India’s maritime history. Lothal, known as the site of the world’s first dockyard, is currently undergoing the construction of the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) on the Gujarat coast. This grand museum, dedicated to showcasing India’s 5000-year-old maritime history that began with the Harappan civilization, aims to become a global hub for learning and appreciating India’s rich seafaring heritage.
PM Modi urged citizens to contribute to preserving and sharing manuscripts, historical documents, or artifacts with the National Archives of India to ensure the legacy of India’s maritime and cultural history is safeguarded. He also highlighted the Oral History Project, which documents the experiences of Partition survivors, aiming to preserve their stories for future generations. With only a few witnesses of the Partition era remaining, this initiative holds great importance in preserving India’s historical narratives.
The development of NMHC is progressing well, with Phase 1A reaching 57% completion. The project, approved by the Union Cabinet in October, is expected to create around 22,000 jobs, with 15,000 direct employment and 7,000 indirect employment. The project will be completed in two phases, with Phase 1A planned to be finished by 2025. The NMHC is set to feature exhibits, interactive displays, and educational programs, attracting visitors globally and fostering a greater appreciation for India’s maritime heritage.
