Modi Raises Indian Seafarers’ Safety Concerns in Talks with Trump

During the G7 summit held in France, US President Donald Trump described his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “very good,” emphasizing that the United States and India are collaborating on new trade agreements. The leaders used the opportunity to discuss a range of issues, with Modi highlighting the safety concerns of Indian seafarers who work in key maritime areas, particularly the volatile Strait of Hormuz.

Modi expressed to Trump that protecting these sailors is a top priority for India. He referenced ongoing tensions in the region and underscored that Indian crew members are vital to international maritime trade routes. Modi voiced his hope that the safety of these seafarers would be given special consideration as part of any international agreements involving Iran.

Trump, when questioned by reporters, recognized the dangers faced by Indian sailors. Trump said: “It’s a rough profession, there’s no question about it, and we work together on it…We love all of those people, they’re great people.” 

Trump further reinforced the ties between the US and India, stating that America would stand by Modi in the event of an attack. He noted his personal regard for Modi, indicating that US support is closely linked to the current Indian leadership.
