Tuticorin Terminal Achieves Green Status with Complete Electrification

Tuticorin International Container Terminal (TICT) at V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port has achieved the status of a “green terminal” after fully electrifying its operational equipment. This milestone was announced by the Union Shipping Secretary during a project review, emphasizing the port’s substantial ongoing investments amounting to approximately Rs 18,000 crore. As part of the green initiative, 13 electric Internal Transfer Vehicles (E-ITVs) were inaugurated to enhance environmentally friendly container handling at the facility.

VOC Port boasts an impressive annual cargo capacity of 82 million tonnes and is renowned as one of India’s oldest ports, with historical trade links tracing back to 123 AD. In addition to its operational capabilities, the port is investing in social infrastructure for its workforce, including amenities like a golf course and a Kendriya Vidyalaya.

The Secretary also focused on the port’s green infrastructure projects, which feature a methanol bunkering facility, a green hydrogen initiative, and substantial investments in wind energy exceeding Rs 18,400 crore. Furthermore, plans for an outer harbour project, estimated to cost over Rs 15,000 crore, aim to increase the port’s cargo capacity by an additional 4 million tonnes annually, positioning Tamil Nadu as a key transshipment hub in southern India.

The electrification of the terminal significantly reduces diesel consumption and emissions from operations, making VOC Port a more attractive option for shipping lines and cargo owners pursuing low-carbon supply chains. The terminal’s commitment to green practices aligns with its expansion plans, showcasing a dual focus on sustainability and enhanced transshipment capacity.
