The Monaco Energy Boat Challenge has been showcasing innovative propulsion and hull design since its inception in 2014. With a record number of participants in 2024, including 40 universities and over 700 students from 25 countries, the event has evolved to emphasize technological advancements in recreational boating. Supported by major players in the industry, the challenge offers students a platform to work on long-term projects and meet strict criteria for registration and participation.
The Energy Class, launched in 2018, serves as a laboratory for testing zero-emission prototypes and encourages the integration of various technologies such as hydrogen and kinetic energy storage. The Solar Class has been phased out, prompting contestants to explore diversified solutions or transition to the Energy or SeaLab Class. The SeaLab Class, open to boats up to 12m in length, focuses on showcasing maritime innovations with an emphasis on sustainability and carbon capture systems.
In 2025, the challenge introduces the AI Class, allowing autonomous boats to compete in a specific category. The event also features the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation Sustainable Yachting Technology Award, which recognizes the best technological solutions in energy efficiency and carbon emission reduction. By incorporating innovative energy solutions and fostering international collaboration, the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge is driving progress towards a cleaner and more efficient future for yachting.
