Conflicts in West Asia and the Persian Gulf have resulted in the tragic loss of 11 Indian seafarers, according to Shipping Secretary Vijay Kumar. During a recent press conference, Kumar announced that the Indian government has successfully repatriated 4,200 Indian seafarers from the Strait of Hormuz region, ensuring their safety amidst escalating tensions.
Since the onset of the US-Iran conflict on February 28, missile attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding areas have surged. This escalation followed a US and Israeli strike on Iran that resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Syed Ali Khamenei and several high-ranking military officials.
The Strait of Hormuz serves as a vital maritime passage, linking the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Given its strategic importance, the ongoing hostilities pose significant risks to shipping operations and the safety of maritime personnel navigating these waters. The Indian government’s efforts to bring its seafarers home highlight the critical situation in the region and the need for enhanced security measures for those operating in these perilous environments.
