Spain’s Balenciaga Shipyard has resumed operations with the keel laying of its first vessel under new ownership by SAFEEN Drydocks, a subsidiary of AD Ports Group. This marks a significant revival for the historic Basque shipbuilder, which aims to compete in the European offshore and renewable energy markets. The initial vessel is an offshore support tug, part of a broader order book that includes another tug.
The keel laying ceremony took place at the shipyard in Zumaia, marking the first construction project since the acquisition. Balenciaga is also pursuing additional contracts in the offshore wind sector, responding to the growing demand for specialized vessels. Founded in 1921, the shipyard is investing in its workforce, facilities, and automation, collaborating with local industrial partners.
Santiago Bardal, Director General of Balenciaga Shipyard, emphasized that the keel laying symbolizes the yard’s resurgence and expressed gratitude for AD Ports Group’s support. Ammar Al Shaiba, CEO of the Maritime & Shipping Cluster at AD Ports Group, highlighted the commitment to enhancing shipbuilding capabilities in Europe and the potential for delivering specialized vessels to international markets.
