The Zero Emissions Ship Technology Association (ZESTAs) and the Skies and Seas Hydrogen-fuels Accelerator (SASHA) Coalition have united to promote green shipping technologies and expedite the maritime energy transition. Representing 70 companies, the two organizations advocate for policies that support zero-emission solutions utilizing hydrogen, battery-electric, and wind propulsion technologies.
Aurelia Leeuw, Director of EU Policy at SASHA, emphasized the importance of their collaboration, stating that their combined expertise can significantly enhance maritime decarbonization efforts. She noted a critical lack of regulatory support for absolute zero-emission technologies, which hinders industry players from adopting these solutions. The goal is to create a regulatory framework that encourages innovation in climate solutions.
Madadh MacLaine, Secretary General of ZESTAs, remarked that while the technology for achieving zero emissions is available, strong policy is essential for commercial viability. He stressed the urgency of addressing ocean health, asserting that shipping must fulfill its responsibility to protect marine environments.
In May 2025, the organizations co-signed a letter to the European Commission, urging for stronger EU green shipping policies to address gaps in recent International Maritime Organization regulations. The letter called for financial support for e-fuel producers, expansion of the EU maritime ETS, and more stringent FuelEU Maritime targets.
