Collaboration for Renewable Bio-LNG Pooling Service to Cut Maritime Emissions

Gasum’s pooling service offers vessels using conventional fuels the opportunity to utilize renewable bio-LNG, providing more than a 90% reduction in emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels like MGO. Energy company Gasum has signed a Letter of Intent with Finnish shipping company Viking Line to join its FuelEU Maritime pooling service. Viking Line plans to exceed compliance standards by using Gasum’s renewable waste and manure-based bio-LNG for its daily routes between Finland and Sweden.

By joining Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pooling service, Viking Line aims to contribute to reducing maritime emissions by 80% by 2050. Gasum will manage the pools, supply ultra-low emission bio-LNG, and offer over-compliance to shipping companies with vessels using conventional fuels. This pooling service simplifies compliance for shipping companies, allowing over-compliant vessels to compensate emissions for under-compliant ones, promoting the production of low-emission fuels.

Liquefied biomethane, or bio-LNG, is a renewable and environmentally friendly fuel with significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuels. Gasum’s strategic goal is to provide 7 TWh of renewable gas annually, including biomethane and e-methane, by 2027. FuelEU Maritime, an EU regulation, aims to increase the use of renewable and low-carbon fuels and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Vessel owners must reduce the carbon intensity of purchased fuel by 80% by 2050, with Gasum’s pooling service offering a cost-effective and reliable way to achieve compliance.
