The FuelEU Maritime regulation, enacted last year, has significantly influenced the rise of maritime liquefied biomethane sales for Gasum. In just one year, the proportion of biomethane in total gas sales to maritime clients surged from 0.8% in 2024 to 12.3% in 2025. This growth signals a promising shift toward greener practices in the maritime industry.
Jacob Granqvist, VP of Maritime at Gasum, highlighted the importance of this trend, stating that it underscores the effectiveness of the methane pathway in reducing shipping emissions. He anticipates further increases in biomethane demand as the push for lower-emission fuel options continues to strengthen. The rise in bio-LNG sales illustrates its potential as a scalable solution for emission reductions in maritime transport, aided by the supportive framework of the FuelEU Maritime regulation.
This regulation mandates a gradual 80% reduction in fuel carbon intensity over the next 25 years, promoting the use of renewable fuels within the sector. Additionally, the EU’s pooling mechanism allows ships using renewable fuel to offset emissions for those that cannot, facilitating a broader adoption of cleaner fuels across the European maritime transport landscape.
To maintain this positive trajectory, Granqvist emphasizes the necessity of sustaining momentum in Europe. He suggests that ongoing progress will hinge on increased biomethane production, seamless cross-border trade, and the development of a robust European biomethane market.
