In Manila, a significant agreement was signed on June 25 between MARINA and Norwegian maritime technology firm Mintra aimed at enhancing the training of Filipino seafarers. This partnership seeks to modernize the training process by incorporating digital learning tools, AI-driven support, and improved tracking of competencies. The initiative is crucial as the Philippines, which supplies approximately 25% of the global merchant fleet crew, prepares for a future influenced by automation and advanced onboard systems.

Geir Michalsen, Chargé d’Affaires at the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Manila, emphasized the strong maritime ties between Norway and the Philippines. He noted that this memorandum of understanding (MOU) signifies the necessary international cooperation to tackle contemporary challenges in seafaring, particularly in areas like digitalization and sustainability.
