The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) in Indonesia is set to modernize 4,582 fishing vessels, a move aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of the fishing sector. This initiative, which is part of a national priority program for 2025-2029, is expected to create approximately 58,000 job opportunities for crew members. Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono emphasized that the modernization is crucial for boosting production, targeting an annual fishing catch volume of 2.3 million tons.

The modernization plan includes 4,515 fishing vessels ranging from 10 to 1,500 gross tons (GT) and 67 transport vessels from 200 to 2,500 GT. The KKP anticipates that this program will have a significant positive impact on the marine sector, enhancing operational efficiency and profitability, which in turn is expected to increase state revenues through foreign exchange, taxes, and other contributions.

In addition to vessel modernization, the KKP is also focusing on various initiatives, including the red and white fishing village program, salt self-sufficiency, and the development of integrated shrimp farming areas. These efforts aim to bolster food security and stimulate economic growth while supporting blue economic policies. Trenggono noted that these programs are vital for enhancing national food security and improving the welfare of the population.
