The World Maritime University (WMU) has achieved a significant milestone with gender parity in its MSc program cohort for the Class of 2026, as highlighted by Professor Momoko Kitada and WISTA’s Elpi Petraki. They emphasize that education is crucial for empowering women in the maritime industry, particularly as the IMO celebrates the 2026 International Day for Women in Maritime. Despite this progress, Kitada and Petraki assert that more needs to be done to foster diversity and inclusion.

Education and training are fundamental to overcoming barriers women face in advancing their careers. Petraki points out that while many women lack confidence, further education can enhance their skills and professional development. Additionally, fostering interest in maritime careers among young women can help address labor shortages in the sector.

However, systemic support is needed; many women often leave the industry due to limited career advancement opportunities. Both experts stress the importance of mentorship and scholarship programs to create a sustainable workforce. They also acknowledge the impact of geopolitical instability on training programs aimed at supporting women.

As a step towards greater inclusivity, WMU will launch a gender mainstreaming handbook to encourage critical thinking and highlight alternative approaches to existing practices. Efforts to incorporate men as allies in gender inclusivity initiatives can drive meaningful change within the industry.
