Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis, led by Abdulmalik al-Houthi, have threatened to launch attacks on Israel if it resumes its assault on Gaza and does not uphold the ceasefire agreement. The group, which controls most of western Yemen, has previously targeted Israeli and other vessels in the Red Sea in solidarity with Gaza’s Palestinians during Israel’s conflict with Hamas. Al-Houthi stated in a televised speech that they are prepared to escalate against Israel if the situation in Gaza worsens.
The ceasefire in Gaza is currently at risk following Hamas’ announcement that it would halt the release of Israeli hostages due to alleged violations by Israel. In response, Israel’s Defence Minister has ordered the military to be on high alert in Gaza and for domestic defense. The Houthis, aligned with Iran’s Axis of Resistance, have also launched missiles and drones towards Israel, demonstrating their anti-Israel and anti-Western stance.
The situation in the region remains tense as the threat of further escalation looms. The Houthis’ willingness to engage in conflict with Israel, along with ongoing tensions in Gaza, pose a significant challenge to regional stability. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with concerns about the potential for a broader conflict to erupt in the region.
