On Saturday, Yemen’s Houthi group announced that eight Saudi oil tankers were compelled to change their routes from the Bab al-Mandab Strait to the Cape of Good Hope due to a maritime blockade imposed by the group. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree shared this information on the social media platform X, emphasizing that the rerouting is part of their ongoing blockade against Saudi vessels.
In response to increasing threats to commercial shipping in the region, Saudi Arabia, along with 13 other nations, recently established a multinational maritime defense coalition. This coalition aims to ensure freedom of navigation, safeguard international trade, and protect energy supply routes in critical areas such as the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the Red Sea, and the Gulf of Aden.
The announcement of the coalition follows the Houthi’s declaration of a maritime blockade on Saudi Arabia on July 20 and subsequent claims of attacks on vessels linked to Saudi interests. In light of these developments, Riyadh has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding maritime traffic and addressing any threats to international navigation.
