Fiji has formalized a partnership with hydrofoiling ferry developer Candela through a memorandum of understanding (MoU), aiming to establish a fleet of vessels to enhance connectivity among its islands. The plan includes deploying Candela’s P-12 electric hydrofoil vessels, with an initial fleet of three to five vessels intended to operate between Nadi/Denarau and the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands. Future expansions are anticipated as part of this initiative.
Green Pacific Shipping will serve as the main operator and financier, responsible for vessel ownership, while the local company Sea Fiji will manage operations within Fiji, recruit local crews, and ensure customer satisfaction. Candela will provide the vessels, train the crew and technicians, and assist in developing local maintenance capabilities. This service will operate under the VukaWaqa brand, replacing traditional diesel boats on busy routes to the outer-island resorts.
The announcement coincided with a three-day meeting among several Pacific Island nations, where a charter was signed to create the Pacific Blue Shipping Partnership (PBSP). This new organization aims to foster investment in maritime infrastructure across the region, promoting a sustainable and equitable transition for domestic shipping. The charter was signed by seven countries, with Palau and Tonga expected to join soon.
