In George Town, Penang MCA chairman Datuk Tan Teik Cheng has emphasized the need for improved maritime safety measures around ferry terminals to prevent vessel collisions. Highlighting his experience as a former chairman of the Penang Port Commission, Tan called for a thorough review of maritime routes, advocating for clearly marked lanes dedicated to passenger ferries and commercial vessels. He stressed the importance of enforcing strict traffic corridors to avoid dangerous overlaps between these two types of vessels.
The urgency for these measures follows a recent incident where the Teluk Bahang ferry collided with the oil tanker MV Mekar Jaya, resulting in injuries to 21 passengers. The collision caused motorcycles on the ferry to topple, and although the injured were treated and discharged, it raised concerns about safety protocols. Tan noted that the ferry had to alter its approach to allow passengers to disembark safely, underscoring the need for enhanced vessel traffic monitoring and communication between vessels and port authorities.
Tan also proposed regular emergency response drills involving ferry operators and rescue agencies, and he urged the Transport Minister to outline immediate support for the injured passengers. He praised the swift actions of the Penang Fire and Rescue Department and emphasized the importance of restoring public confidence in the safety of Penang’s iconic ferries, which are vital to the state’s tourism and heritage.
