On April 28, 2026, Iran’s ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, accused the United States and Israel of conducting an “unwarranted large-scale war of aggression” against Iran. Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting focused on maritime security, he attributed rising tensions and threats to maritime safety in the Strait of Hormuz to the actions of these nations. Iravani dismissed allegations against Iran, asserting that it is the US and its allies that are violating international law.

Iravani claimed that since February 28, the US and Israel have engaged in aggressive actions that contravene the UN Charter, jeopardizing both regional and global stability. He specifically highlighted the imposition of a maritime blockade, which includes the seizure of Iranian vessels and the detention of their crews, labeling these acts as illegal and akin to piracy. He emphasized that Iran has implemented necessary measures to ensure safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital corridor for global oil and gas.

The ambassador rejected criticisms from other nations during the meeting, characterizing them as unfounded and politically motivated. He argued that these allegations distract from the realities of the situation and accused some countries of applying “double standards” regarding maritime security. Iravani concluded by placing the responsibility for any disruptions in maritime traffic squarely on the US and its allies, asserting that their destabilizing actions have heightened tensions and threatened safe navigation in the region.
