The Israeli government recently approved a maritime transport agreement with Morocco, as confirmed in an official statement. Signed in Rabat on May 29, 2023, the agreement aims to enhance maritime transport by ensuring free competition, freedom of navigation, and mutual cooperation between the two nations.
The agreement addresses various maritime aspects, including safety, port access, taxation, and dispute resolution. It allows mutual recognition of ship documents and guarantees equal treatment for vessels and shipping companies from both countries. Additionally, it permits shipping companies to utilize their earnings locally or transfer them abroad, in line with each nation’s foreign currency regulations.
A joint maritime committee will be established to oversee the agreement’s implementation and tackle maritime transport issues. Israeli Minister of Transport Miri Regev emphasized that this agreement strengthens ties between Israel and Morocco, opening new trade routes that will benefit both economies.
However, this approval comes amid strained relations following the October 7 events and the ongoing Gaza conflict, which has led to calls for blocking ships carrying military equipment for Israeli forces from docking in Moroccan ports.
