The Nord Stream company is suing Lloyd’s and Arch Insurance for nearly 580 million euros ($684 million) following explosions in September that disrupted gas supplies from Russia to Germany. The blasts, which remain unclaimed by any state, significantly escalated the conflict and strained energy resources in Europe.
In connection with the explosions, two Ukrainians were arrested in Italy and Poland, requested by German prosecutors after explosives traces were found on a boat linked to the incident. While Russia has accused Ukraine of orchestrating the attack, Kyiv has denied any involvement. The lawsuit focuses on damages to the Nord Stream 1 pipelines, with the company seeking compensation.
Insurers argue that the policy excludes damages caused by war or government orders. Their lawyer, Simon Salzedo, noted that experts believe the blasts likely involved state actors, including Ukraine, Russia, or the U.S. The trial will explore the links between the explosions and the ongoing Ukraine conflict, while Nord Stream’s legal team emphasizes the lack of definitive evidence pointing to any specific government’s involvement.
