The South Korean maritime ministry announced on April 23, 2026, that illegal fishing by foreign vessels will incur stricter penalties under new regulations. This decision aims to address ongoing issues with unlicensed fishing in South Korea’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ). The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries revealed that fines for unlicensed vessels will increase significantly from 300 million won to 1.5 billion won (approximately $1 million).
This legislative change follows directives from President Lee Jae Myung, who has urged maritime police to adopt a rigorous approach toward illegal fishing activities, particularly those involving Chinese vessels within Korean waters. The government’s intensified stance underscores its commitment to protecting marine resources and enforcing fishing regulations more effectively.
In a related context, a helicopter from the Yeosu Aviation Unit of the West Sea Regional Coast Guard was recently deployed to monitor and document illegal fishing operations. On August 9, 2024, the helicopter successfully filmed a vessel engaged in unlawful fishing activities, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in enforcing maritime laws.
These measures reflect South Korea’s determination to safeguard its marine environment and ensure compliance with fishing regulations, reinforcing the importance of lawful fishing practices in its waters.
