On August 29, a merchant vessel caught fire and subsequently sank off Romania’s coast in the Black Sea. Romanian authorities, including President Nicusor Dan, indicated that the incident may have resulted from an impact. The Romanian Border Police confirmed the fire occurred while the ship was navigating through the country’s exclusive economic zone but did not specify a cause for the blaze.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, shipping activities and port operations in the Black Sea have faced heightened threats, with the frequency of attacks accelerating into 2026. During a press briefing in Chisinau, Moldova, President Dan mentioned that the vessel appeared to have sunk due to being struck. However, he noted that there is currently no information regarding who might be responsible for the potential attack and advised against speculation. Importantly, the incident took place outside Romania’s territorial waters.
All twelve crew members aboard the merchant ship were rescued, according to the Romanian Border Police. Ten were saved by border guards, one of whom sustained injuries, while the remaining two were assisted by the ship’s crew. An investigation into the incident is forthcoming, as authorities seek to clarify the circumstances surrounding the event.
